The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has inaugurated an 11-member Independent Investigative Panel (IIP) to probe allegations of human rights violations against the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other units of the Nigeria Police Force (NFP).
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Tony Ojukwu disclosed during the inauguration of the Independent Investigative Panel, that security agents responsible for the alleged killing of “EndSARS” protesters will be prosecuted
Mr. Ojukwu called on the members of the public to submit petitions to the IIP on allegations of human rights violations committed by SARS and other units of the Nigerian Police for necessary action.
According to him, the IIP was set up to ensure that measures to be taken on the defunct SARS or operatives of the Nigerian Police found in violating human rights.
The panel is also to ensure that remedial steps that may enhance the professional conduct of the Nigerian Police and any other recommendations that may be considered appropriate.
“The commission wishes to reiterate that nothing short of holding accountable the officers who unleashed the use of live ammunition against peaceful protesters,“ he said
Mr. Ojukwu said that members of the public who lost their properties will be compensated because they were given protection by the security agents.
According to him, “The Commission has directed its staff across the country to monitor the protest and submit a comprehensive report to enable the agency to take necessary steps in accordance with the law”
He urged members of the panel to discharge their duties to Nigerians without fear or favor.
